Awakening Through Balancing The Energy Body
“In the traditions, Spirit is found neither in Heaven nor in Earth, but in the Heart. The Heart has always been seen as the integration or the union point of Heaven and Earth, the point that Earth grounded Heaven and Heaven exalted the Earth. Neither Heaven nor Earth alone could capture Spirit; only the balance of the two found in the Heart could lead to the secret door beyond death and mortality and pain.” ~ Ken Wilber, Grace and Grit
Between heaven and earth there lies a gateway into the heart and our life purpose. To reach it, we must walk the pilgrimage of balance where, over many lifetimes, we integrate the seven chakras of our energy body, and come into balance at the heart, where heaven meets earth, and the spiritual and human realms unite.
While it is true that on an absolute level we are inherently whole, on a relative level we are fragmented, expressed through an imbalance of our seven energy centers. Imagine the seven chakras like a teeter-totter with the first chakra on the far left, the seventh chakra on the far right, and the heart (fourth) chakra as the fulcrum. Based on lifetimes of conditioning, people orient towards either the upper or lower three chakras, to the right or the left respectively. If the teeter-totter leans to the right, they are influenced more by the celestial/etheric qualities of the fifth, sixth and seventh chakras. If leaning to the left, the physical, emotional and mental nature of the first, second and third chakras are more influential. The teeter-totter either leans towards the spiritual or human. Where there is imbalance, there is an unevolved, or uninvolved, side that has yet to be fully integrated. The path to balance is to heal or awaken these more inactive chakras, thus integrating the spiritual and human and balancing the teeter-totter.
One of the greatest catalysts for balance is relationships. Whether it is through friends, family or romance, whatever side of the energy body teeter-totter we lean towards we will attract a mirror opposite to invite us into balance. This is the primary purpose of all relationships: To heed the call of our mirror to walk towards the centre or balancing point. In a sense, relationships are calling each participant to, “Come over here and play on this side for a while!”
I have always leaned towards the abstract quality of the upper three chakras. Replete with grandiose ideas and vision, I lacked the pragmatism to make concepts concrete and the compassion to make them palatable. I couldn’t integrate heaven into earth. No coincidence, my closest relationships have always been with people very rooted in the earth. They have taught me to appreciate the little things in everyday life I almost always oversaw. From savouring the sweetness of a cup of tea, to imbibing the playful innocence of children and animals, to revering the unfolding of a flower from its earthly genesis, I have learned to bring my awareness down to earth and enjoy what it means to be present within the human experience.
There is no greater example of this than my relationship with Lynda. Workshop co-leader, sounding board, dearest friend and perfect mirror, she has continuously taught me to bring my ideas to earth. For instance, in designing and implementing workshops, she has preached the value of structure and stepping stones as necessary for human learning, something easily overlooked when you live in space. She has continuously taught me to be more compassionate to the needs of others, and myself, and to bring my insights into a healthy balance. Thanks to Lynda, and all my wonderful teachers in disguise, I have learned to walk with my head in the clouds and my feet on the earth.
In bridging the spiritual and human, my heart centre has gradually awakened. The heart’s blessing has been to increasingly ground and activate the gifts and potentials of all my chakras, raising my consciousness and the quality of my life. This pilgrimage of awakening towards the heart centre, for most people, is a gradual process requiring lifetimes of experience, including countless relationships. There is, however, a tipping point that we all eventually reach when we’ve walked the teeter-totter into balance. At its fulcrum lies a threshold, or gateway, where we finally and completely fall into the heart, and thus the heart is fully awakened. It is a quantum leap in consciousness, where heaven and earth collide, spirit fuses with human, and a new life of purpose and awakened awareness is spontaneously manifested into our experience. Service of God truly begins from this integrated place because it is only from the centre that we can hold both sides, the human and spiritual, equally and with the full blessing of our heart.
A new kind of human is emerging in our world: a Spiritual Human - fully integrated and aware as an individual human and infinite being. Now, more than ever, not only is humanity accelerating its balance quest, but it is on the verge of the collective tipping point or critical mass. A quantum shift in human consciousness is at our doorstep, where the ocean meets the sky, the swan unites with the eagle, and our collective heart awakens…and a new life, and world, begins.
